Sometimes the price of destiny is higher than anyone imagined....Dark Magic, Hidden Destiny

For three centuries a divine prophecy and a line of warrior queens protected Skala. But the people grew complacent and Erius, a usurper king, claimed his young half sister's throne. Now plague and drought stalk the land, war with Skala's ancient rival Plenimar drains the country's lifeblood, and to be born female into the royal line has become a death sentence as the king fights to ensure the succession of his only heir, a son. For King Erius the greatest threat comes from his own line -- and from Illior's faithful, who spread the Oracle's words to a doubting populace. As noblewomen young and old perish mysteriously, the king's nephew -- his sister's only child -- grows toward manhood. So when you are sick of modern day top notch low quality fantasy books, that are all mainstream and repetitive and boring, you do what a girl got to do and you go back to read old fantasy titles.
When I first joined goodreads "The Bone Doll's Twin" was one of the first books recommended to me. I started the beginning but could not really get into it and put it aside, that was like 8 years ago.I never could get it out of my head. The idea of the book triggered me so hard that I came back to it finally.

Pro:
Actual interesting question and things to think about
Cool magic
Nice old school aesthetic
Good horror
Loved the characters and the dynamics

Contra:
Sloooooooow
Not much happens at all, and at some point there is a huge break in the story
Ending of the first book is …

This author was recommended by Anne Bishop, one of my favorite authors, as one of her inspirations. So far, I do see similarities in the writing of the two.

I really enjoyed this book.

This book ends very suddenly. I haven't started the second book yet, but it better pick up nearly right where this one left off. I am wondering if this trilogy was not all one story to Ms. Flewelling, but the demands of publishing required the story split.

I hated the premise of the story. My stomach lurched through all the passages that referred to the killing of the baby. I am also hoping that (note this is a major spoiler) Ki is not dead. It seems to me that the author has hovered so much on that bond, I was certain Ki would grow up with Tobin, find out her secret perhaps a little early, but …

I really enjoyed the story but I have to deduct 1 star for the kind of awkward perspective changes that occur throughout all 3 books and the variety of "who said what" musings when reading dialogue.

I also felt that there was a way too long phase where Tobin stays at the keep and nothing really happens.
