I want a workshop now. Not having a ton of tools and a fixed place to do all my DIY stuff now makes me feel like after I had finished Chris Hadfields Austronaut's Guide to Life on Earth: It's awesome, but you'll never gonna make it. (Meaning I'm never gonna make it. I'll never be an astronaut and I likely never own all the tools I think I need. Well, I'll keep stealing my boyfriends, then shrug)

A structured chaotic trip through the brain of one of my favourite people. This is my first audiobook since primary school (excepting longform podcasts), and I enjoyed it immensely.

I am not sure what Adam Savage tried to do with this book. Half anecdotes, half lecture how to be a successful maker and a little bit of biography sprinkled in between. The result is a book that is a bit confusing to read for me. The writing style is really great. If he would have focused on beeing one book and not a mix of those two, it would have been an really amazing read.

I had high hopes for this book, and it did not disappoint.

I listened to the audiobook, which I recommend. Savages reads it himself, and hearing it in his voice, with his inflection on what's most important, was very enjoyable. He's a showman, and that makes high perfect for recording, especially his own book.

The book is extremely encouraging, and part of it is letting people know it's OK to be creating whatever moves them, be it models, software, or even cooking. It's not all just a pep talk, however: There is a lot of very practical advice. Part of the advice is how he does things, and part is how you might find your own way.

I especially appreciated his references to being a generalist. I'm a software developer, and consider myself a generalist as well. His take on that helped me immensely.

When I started reading this, I didn’t realize I was getting a self-help book, but Adam takes us layer-by-layer through his own maker process, sharing tips and advice along the way, advice that I think can help in many different areas of life. Thanks, Adam!
