I thought the dialogue, characters and details in this book were better than your average beach read. And what fantastic imagery! I could just smell the shit in the slums and diesel blowing in the cars wafting with the pleasant odors of curry and frying chapati dough. The noise and crowds conjured up a recent trip I took to India vividly, and I was glad, unfortunately for my courageous parts, to be experiencing India through a book rather than to be walking through Bombaystic with all its chaos. The story revolves around the mysterious pregnancy of Maya, the hope and only relation of the protaganist, Bhima. Bhima is an aging domestic servant who has slaved away for Serabia, a middle class Parsi widow, for most of her life. Sera has been kind and generous, but ultimately the cruel class differences between them alienate them hopelessly. Serabia is confronted with the denial that has been part of her own survival for so long, and she throws poor Bhima under the proverbial bus. Everybody loses really, especially the women.
