Full disclosure: I saw and adored the movie first and many times before I picked up the book.

That said, I'm actually quite happy this is one time the movie adaption and book were completely different. They both had something unique about them to bring to the table show casing this little story about an average boy, his dragon, and rising to save his Viking Town.

The book is fun. It's silly, witty, and has a good dark humor about. Hiccup is rightfully frustrated, the dragons are vain and sarcastic, the adults are delightfully dim, and the group of boys pull together when they need to at the climatic finish.

I like that the book doesn't take anything too seriously. You have a scene where a dragon is eating sheep, detailed and gruesome, while maintaining intelligent conversation. I laughed toward the end of it, and later when things get more …
