"It" is a Psammead, a sand fairy which gives the children a wish a day. And their wishes bring much excitement but often a lot of trouble too.

Another entertaining and literate novel. My grandson (9) and I enjoyed this one as much as we did "The Railway Children". Edith's outstanding use of Victorian English provided a great learning opportunity for both of us. Her droll humor was also most entertaining and enlightening.
