This was a terrifically engaging way to learn some history for me. Having lived in many areas of the American West, the author's incorporation of those landscapes into the stories made a strong connection to my experiences. Taking the perspective of characters from the vastly different groups involved, armies, tribes, trappers, and explorers, gives it a well-rounded feel. Some colorful details that might have questionable historical provenance are entertaining and usually flagged.
