Bridie Devine, female detective extraordinaire, is confronted with the most baffling puzzle yet: the kidnapping of Christabel Berwick, secret daughter of Sir Edmund Athelstan Berwick, and a peculiar child whose reputed supernatural powers have captured the unwanted attention of collectors trading curiosities in this age of discovery.

I liked this. It was a solid mystery that weaved the past and the present in unexpected ways. It also made me sad. I loved Ruby. And, that final line kinda makes me mad. What does that mean? Will there be a sequel? I will say that Ruby's eventual reveal was not my favorite because it wasn't someone we had seen in the past over the course of the book. There was no figuring it out, we just knew when Bridie remembered. Also, how do you forget that?!?!

Anyway, it was a very fun book with some lovely lines and I'd happily read a multitude of Bridie Devine books.
