Hana has signed up to play the violin at the talent show, even though she's only had three lessons. Her brothers predict disaster. But Hana practices and practices, inspired by her grandfather, or Ojiichan, who played the violin every day when she visited him in Japan. As Hana takes the stage, doubt is all she can hear, until she recalls her grandfather's words of encouragement, and shows the audience how beautiful music can take many forms.

Hana signs up to play violin at the talent show even though she is only a beginner. Her brothers mock her lack of skill, but Hana practices hard, inspired by her virtuoso ojiichan.

Review of 'Hana Hashimoto, sixth violin' on 'Goodreads'

An uber charming story about a little one determined to practice her violin before the talent show so she can make her ojiichan (grandfather) proud. Beautiful, poetic language throughout. Hana's ultimate performance, in which she mimics sounds like bird calls, similar to the ones her ojiichan would play for her, is so heartwarming and such a lovely way to demonstrate a talent even when one has a low skill level. I was rooting for Hana the whole book and was so pleased that she was ultimately triumphant. Would recommend to a kiddo learning any skill, not just music, who needs encouragement to keep trying.
