Peak: Secrets from the New Science of Expertise is a 2016 science book by psychologist K. Anders Ericsson and science writer Robert Pool. The book summarizes the findings of Ericsson's 30-year research into the general nature and acquisition of expertise. Intended for a lay audience, Peak is an expository book on deliberate practice, a term coined by Ericsson to refer to the specific learning method used by experts to achieve superior performance in their fields, and mental representations. The book was written partly as a response to the misrepresented but increasingly commonplace idea of the "10,000-hour rule," popularized by Malcolm Gladwell in his 2008 book Outliers and which Gladwell had based on Ericsson's own research. In this regard, Ericsson also published an excerpt from this book in Salon titled "Malcolm Gladwell got us wrong: Our research was key to the 10,000-hour rule, but here’s what got oversimplified".A website dedicated to …

another self-help book;
while they are having a separate page with sources they never really put any links to research when talking about it, I won't even bother looking at it - tones of crap there 100%;
the entire book could fit 5-10 A4's but obviously in this case they couldn't price it 'properly'.
if you wanna feel good about yourself for doing something 'right' (we all do to some extent) - this is your book, you can share it with other successful friends of yours.

This book is kind of a reality check for Malcolm Gladwell's Outlier. Gladwell's 10,000-hour rule sounded like an impossible thing to do, for you to become an expert in a topic because of the sheer number of hours you have to put in. This book gives you techniques, mental models to develop skills and improve in any particular area. The biggest takeaway for me is the deliberate practice as a lens to deconstruct any expert or superstar in a topic and understand them better.

This book provides a concise summation of research on effective practice, as well as useful ideas and examples that could apply in any number of realms, both personal and professional. Definitely a lot of food for thought for educators here on how we can develop classroom pedagogy and curriculum that better adheres to these principles. As a special education teacher, the frame presented here is especially relevant in considering how we can move beyond simply telling kids to try harder, and instead provide useful and specific direction on which skills need to be practiced, and how.
