The way this reads, I suspect Douglas Adams took inspiration from Sirens. Fun to see how the author is juust short of putting himself in the ways that will become so telling of his style in the future.
Too bad about the what is done to Beatrice and the words put in her mouth in the end: Sirens of Titan is not just maybe of its time, but also unkind or sympathetic in a way that hard to look at (or even past).
