Ética a Nicômaco

What is good? What is a well-rounded person? What can I even say about this book from a layman's perspective?

Putting the historical significance and foundational shaping of Western thought aside, its practicality for me came in short bursts. Some parts were interesting, and some were very much not. The dull parts were typically drawn-out logical procedures on what appears to be common sense things, but were necessary for his line of reasoning. The interesting bits were timeless takes on virtue, anger, "the good", pleasure, etc. He has a lot of interesting bits on friendship.

You can see how Aristotle's work here led to Politics, as he deems legislation the best way to improve a population at scale (forcing them to do good things). I think he even says something near the end along the lines of how discussing ethics necessarily leads into politics.

It took me so long to read but I regret nothing. The original self help/build better habits book. Aristotle bringing the reality to the idealised concepts of Plato.

Aristotle really understands the need to cultivate the habits of a good person before you can even become a good person, which is the kind of deep understanding of human nature I thoroughly appreciate. People aren't innately good or bad but they do have a gut that has the capacity to become good, you want to spend your life cultivating your gut feeling to be the right feeling.

He also has a nice ongoing thread on the need for unity within oneself, how each part of you is reflected in even the smallest actions you take, so you need to strive to achieve consistency across all your own selves. If you want to be whole you need to make sure every part …
