Seanan McGuire has a real knack for putting stakes in front of her characters and then stabbing them with the story stakes and twisting them for every ounce of sweet sweet drama.

I keep expecting politeness, the first lesson. Excellent story, however.

Well, that was fun! I'm not used to jumping into an established world quite like that, but the story does a good job of mostly standing on its own without too much exposition to drag down the pace.
