True rating 1.5/5. I wanted to like this. I really, really did. It's silly, but I feel bad for not liking it. Writing about trauma is just about one of the bravest, hardest things you can do as a poet, and at the same time, the most cathartic. So I wanted to fall in love with these poems.

But...this is peak Instapoetry, and not in the good way.

Don't get me wrong; I don't think Instapoetry is "not poetry". Some of it can grab you by the mind and splinter your heart into pieces with only a few lines. There are people who write in this...genre? movement?...who just nail it, you know? But Lovelace isn't one of them. I think she has the potential to be one of them, eventually (especially after finishing her second book, [b:The Witch Doesn't Burn in This One|35924698|The Witch Doesn't Burn in This One (Women …

„maybe
we will meet again
in another place—
a place where
forgiveness grows
as lovely as
the tomatoes you
used to grow
in your
garden.
- the shiny red hope that gets me through late nights.”

Some poems were great, others were plain, pretentious and underwhelming. Please, don't expect too much of it.

I am ambivalent about this book. On one hand I love the premise (and the story, to the extent that there is a plot behind the loosely structured free verse). On the other hand, much of the poetry does little innovative with language (in spite of the innovative narrative form of the book as a whole), and at times trips over the line into cloyingly saccharine. Reading this felt rather like eating mysterious chocolates whose centres occasionally contain something you dislike intensely - pleasurable enough to keep reaching for more, even if you can still taste something slightly off.

Trees have words the wind cannot carry,
so we must write on them their stories
until there are none left
for them to tell.

-write the story.
