How I live now

Das Buch hat einige außergewöhnliche Momente und vor allem Teil 2 (eine Art Epilog) ist so eindrücklich, dass ich die ganze Zeit beim Lesen eine Gänsehaut hatte.

Auch die Atmosphäre wird immer gut rüber gebracht. Man kann sich wirklich alles bildlich vorstellen, als ob man einen Film sehen würde.

Allerdings fand ich die Erzählweise und Teenagergedanken von Daisy stellenweise so nervig, dass ich das Buch dann irgendwie doch eher ungern gelesen habe. Außerdem fand ich es nicht ideal, dass sich die Liebesgeschichte zwischen Cousins abspielt. Und auch wie die neunjährige Piper in Bezug zu jungen Soldaten gesetzt wurde... Es hat sich sehr falsch angefühlt.

Alles in allem würde ich eher die Verfilmung empfehlen. Dort ist Edmond zwar ziemlich anders als im Buch, aber allgemein hat mir der Film dann trotzdem besser gefallen.

“Tomorrow, when the war began” is a better series on a similar theme, but this still packs a mighty punch. I found it interesting how similar early scenes of the war was to covid lockdown times, and it makes me consider how much (even though we were safe) kids may have been traumatised by the last few years. A very “early 2000s” voice, and captures teenage hood fairly well. Not sure about the chain smoking cousin-love though.

I don't really know how to describe this book, but I really liked it. It has a magical feel to it, but is firmly grounded in a very harsh reality. Even some of the more unconventional elements of this story are completely believable and almost poetic.

This is one of those books you wish didn't end. I wish there was a continuing story.
