In the zoo there are all kinds of animal families. But Tango's family is not like any of the others. This illustrated children's book fictionalizes the true story of two male penguins who became partners and raised a penguin chick in the Central Park Zoo.

Gay penguins? Why not!

First, I love penguins. So a story about penguins is generally going to be intriguing. This story is based on real life, also.

Second, it's a story with LGBTQ+ representation (specifically, gay representation) written in a way that can definitely connect children to learning about different relationships and family structures. I'm in favour of there being more any-queer representation books that have positive outcomes for people of all ages. I didn't have any as a child, and I would have significantly benefited from their existence.

Our next generations need them, though it'd be nice to see more human queer people than animal queer people.

I finally got to read the little book that has been such a fuss in various places. The book, though labeled as fiction (at least by the Library of Congress' subject headings) is actually the true story of two male penguins who form a couple in the Central Park Zoo and raise a baby penguin together. The story is a heartwarming, endearing one that children and their parents will enjoy. It also features very cute illustration work.
