Solid entry in the Orphan X saga!
Full review soon.
The third full book in the Orphan X series, this one finds Evan (Orphan X) witnessing the death (again?) of his mentor, which is meant to drag him into a trap, as the current leader of the Orphan program wants him taken out, for reasons Evan (and us!) are not sure of. He rescues a teenage girl who was being groomed for the program as well and together they try to track down this new Orphan threat.
This started off real well but kind of lagged as Evan tried to figure out the teenage girl forced under his care. He kept wanting to drop her off but you and I both know that isn't going to happen. That story line went on for a bit too long, as we all know she isn't just going to get left at the …

This started off real well but kind of lagged as Evan tried to figure out the teenage girl forced under his care. He kept wanting to drop her off but you and I both know that isn't going to happen. That story line went on for a bit too long, as we all know she isn't just going to get left at the nearest bus stop.
But once Evan settles into an uneasy acceptance (never a full acquiescence though) the story clips right along. It's cool how his usual rescue effort ties into the main plot line of tracking the Orphan out to kill him. There are the usual cool tech getting used and the girl is, naturally, a gifted hacker so she is able to hack into all kinds of useful places. Computers these days are getting to be a bit like magic - give the hacker the "skillz" and you can get yourself out of all kinds of plot corners. But it wasn't too badly used, I guess.
The violence erupts at a pretty good pace and the conclusion is breathtaking. And leaves the door wide open for the next one, [b:The Intern|42036581|The Intern (Orphan X, #3.5)|Gregg Hurwitz|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1538901202l/42036581.SX50.jpg|65563289].
I am not sure why I enjoy these so much. I think it is the very interesting dichotomy of Evan's life, where he is desperately trying to be a "regular" person, while at the same time being a stone cold killer who promises to extract anyone out of their hole. The relationship he has with his single mom neighbor (who happens to be a district attorney) is deliciously edgy, as his is normal interactions with the nosy folks in his condo building.
And yet there is some amazing action and some breathtaking escapes. This series has been a blast to read and I can't wait to read the next one!
