3 stars
Covers the digestive system in depth—mouth, gut structure, reflux, vomiting, constipation, bacteria, parasites, etc.
If you have digestive problems, this is a good resource. If you don’t, it may be tough to get through. The tone varies between an elementary school lesson and a research paper. Two passages from the book:
“The inner sphincter’s mission is to keep all unpleasantness at bay. If it had its way, Great-Aunt Bertha would break wind more often.”
and
"Examples of bacteria that can resist being digested are Lactobacillus rhamnosus, Lactobacillus acidophilus, and the abovementioned Lactobacillus casei Shirota.”
I most enjoyed the last chapter. It covered four methods for keeping bacteria under control (dilution, drying, temperature, cleaning) and information on antibiotics, probiotics, and prebiotics. Tongue scrapers also got a mention, which was nice. They should be an oral hygiene standard.
