Damn, that cliffhanger! 0.0

I'm absolutely in love with the art. It captures the sinister and dark and mysterious atmosphere so so well!! Also an incredible inspiration for Inktober right now.

Getting christian witch trials vibes from the kingdom – alas, a group of people with power sentencing other people to death because they think they might be cursed, but don't really have proof.
I know there will be lots of revelations later on, that most of the tales about the beasts are lies. Definitely.
Well, maybe also not, who knows, but it's very likely.

Other than that, the story is really interesting and the two main characters are lovely. Not much yet revealed about them, but they're already in my heart. I'm begging the author not to let them suffer too much.

Shiva is a small girl living with an "outsider," who she calls Teacher, near an abandoned village. Humans can't touch outsiders without being cursed, so Teacher takes great care to keep Shiva safe from himself and others. Shiva, being a small child, is curious about the world and constantly finds ways to sneak away. Their dynamic melts my heart, at least when it isn't breaking it.

After this first volume there are a lot of questions about Shiva, Teacher, the world, and the events leading to this story. When the mystery deigns to part for brief moments, it does so with equal parts melancholy and tension, that things shouldn't have to go this way and you hope it gets better. It never overwhelms, as there are plenty of bright points to make you smile along the way, but when there's conflict it really succeeds in driving up the tension.

Clearly related to Yamazaki's "The Ancient Magus's Bride," and I suspect it came first. It's almost more of an allegory than a story, though I suspect it will be hard to maintain the mysterious vibe in subsequent volumes.

I haven't read much manga before, but it caught my eye while browsing in SF's Kinokuniya. Definitely picking up the next volume.
