Alison Weir is one of my favorite authors. With a couple exceptions - her books on Mary Stuart and Isabella, queen of Edward II of England - I love her books. She is both easy to read and informative, two things that do not always go together. "The Life of Elizabeth I" paints a fascinating portrait of one of England's greatest - if the not THE greatest - rulers. Elizabeth I was not perfect - she could be selfish, cruel, and petty. However, she gave hope to England during the disastrous reign of her older half-sister, Mary I, and dragged England back to a prominence it had not enjoyed since her father was alive.
Highly recommended. I also recommend some other books by Weir - "Henry VIII: The King and His Court," "The Children of Henry VIII" (details the lives of Edward VI and Mary I, and the early life …
