вперше читав колись дуууже давно, ще підлітком, і російською; тоді оцінив би на трієчку (чомусь); зараз переслухав у оригіналі — тверда четвірка! чудова класична фантастика.
Book was sort of entertaining and ecological enough but jeez it could do with the feminist SF treatment. It read like a LeGuin novel written by someone's white grandpa. Casual misogyny. Western logic. I might come back for vol. 2, idk (I actually read this in the trilogy book).
This was a fairly average story in my opinion. There were a few places where what Jason was saying was just a complete guess, and then it turned out everyone thinks it's completely true.
I don't regret spending time listening to the audiobook from Librivox, but I won't rush to listen to the follow-up books.
Rating a little highly because I got more than I expected out of it (and if followed that crummy short by Harry Disco). Moves fast, is a good mix of corny and mysterious, and has a good librarian scene!
[Update: reduced the rating a bit because the 'cliffhanger ending' was not adequately resolved in the sequel. Boo.]
