War ignites when magic and gunpowder combine in the second book in acclaimed author Brian McClellan's epic new fantasy series Gods of Blood and Powder.

The country is in turmoil. With the capital city occupied, half a million refugees are on the march, looking for safety on the frontier, accompanied by Lady Flint's soldiers. But escaping war is never easy, and soon the battle may find them, whether they are prepared or not.

Back in the capital, Michel Bravis smuggles even more refugees out of the city. But internal forces are working against him. With enemies on all sides, Michel may be forced to find help with the very occupiers he's trying to undermine.

The vengeance was only in his head. But then again, that's all that ever mattered.

Yup, this book is excellent. Middle books in trilogies are tricky and their inability to be memorable can hurt the series but Wrath of Empire hit all the marks. It picks up the pieces from its predecessor and works to set up the finale nicely.

The characters are spread out and their POV's help drive the story forward. I never found myself tired of a chapter or story line even if some are exposition and not explosions.

What a lovely book. Even though it took me a while to read, I enjoyed it greatly. Now my decision to start an unfinished series is going to hurt me, because I'll have to wait a while until the trilogy concludes in "Blood of Empire".

One thing I really loved about WoE is the character development for Ben Styke. He started off as a muderish brute but really grew in this book. The ending for Vlora, however, felt a bit deus ex machina. It was nice, overall, but didn't feel quite right.

Anyway, I had a lot of fun with this book and will definitely pick up Blood of Empire, hopefully some time next year.
