It was a weird read (which is good) with a lot of video game background (which worked well for me) and a ton of backstory (which got realit stodgy after a while). The novel picked up speed once the setting was all done and the video-game background was "revealed" (It was recommended to me with the words "and he wakes up and realizes he's a video game character" so I imagined a WoW-like visual anyway).

The story was still fun and a nice once it got going. I'm not sure I can ever look at NPCs the same way, but actually I'd like to try a game with final-dead NPCs. Might be fun, despite what the critics say.

Hrm. What to say about this book. I enjoyed the idea of the book more than the book. By the 50% mark I found myself skimming sections only to go back when something suddenly changed. I kinda knew how things would end by then, I really wanted to see what happened next, but found the book was really dragging on.

I wanted to like it way more than I actually liked it.

I did enjoy all the characters though, and the overarching story, just wish some of the middle chunks were more exciting or removed.

Meh. Read this book just because of the author, but it was pretty disappointing. A good humour author has a light touch, but here every point is as subtle as a lead balloon, and generally about as funny, too. The characters are universally pretty unlikable, including the protagonist.

I think what impressed me least was the lack of even the slightest attempt to be internally consistent. For example, the protagonist is an NPC in a generic medieval style computer game, yet regularly uses analogies from 20th century life (for example, describing something as flickering like a broken light; or as looking like a chocolate eclair; neither if which the character would ever have encountered in his life).

Overall: unfortunately disappointing; I'd hoped for better from this author.
