Review of 'Some Girls Bite (Chicagoland Vampires, #1)' on 'Goodreads'

The pitch: Merit, a 28-year old grad student, and daughter of an influencial family of Chicago, gets attacked by a vampire, and turned into one by another who happened to be there. Vampires came out of the coffin a few months before, and the world is still pretty much adjusting - although surprisingly well. And so, Merit gets to learn how to be a vampire. And how to wield a katana. And how to relate with her House (because there are three vampire Houses) (no, one of them is NOT Slytherin.) And that sort of things. In the meantime, her roommate learns how to be a sorceress.
It's definitely on the cheesy side of things, but it's well done and funny. It probably won't age very well, because there are quite a lot of current cultural references; but until it gets too old, it's a very enjoyable read.

I am not normally into Vampire fiction, but the idea of the series intrigued me so I gave it a shot. I was not disappointed.

This novel had a good balance of paranormal mystery, vampire politics, interesting characters, and touched very lightly into paranormal romance - just enough to keep the vampire seduction vibe in view, but not too much to place it into erotica.

I enjoy the character, particularly because she is a strong character who doesn't actually want to be a vampire, which makes the dive into the secret world of Chicago Vampire House Politics all the more interesting.

I will be giving the other books in the series a try.
