Review of 'Geek Feminist Revolution' on 'Goodreads'

4 stars

A great and rousing read with a lot of important insights into women's experiences in geekdom. I highly recommend giving it a read, as she covers a swath of the problems facing geek subculture that cannot be ignored and that can often lead progressive-minded people feeling despair.

The only criticisms I'd have are both related to my own preferences rather than the book's qualities. I'm not used to reading collection-of-essays books, so the format and the occasional repetitions or disjointedness was jarring to me. Hurley's writing style, while powerful and passionate, also sometimes leaves me longing for a more analytical and detailed voice - but that's for someone else to write. Hurley's book is moving and motivating and speaks to unpleasant truths and challenges in the geek subcultures, and in that regards it's very much needed reading in these times.

Go read it, and then keep it in your mind …
