3.5 stars. This is the type of book I would describe to kids as "mystery light." I kind of wish it hadn't been billed as a mystery because honestly I was less interested in the twists and turns of the story and more interested in Martha's personal journey, so I would have rather had this sold to me as a compelling realistic fiction with a side of mystery. The characters are definitely the strength of this book, particularly Martha and Zelda . I wasn't wild about the ending. The physical conflict of almost drowning seemed so out of sync with the emotional conflict that drove the rest of the story. Although I loved the ode to libraries/stories and the subtle LGBTQ plotline. Overall, a mixed bag for me.
