This edition provides the general information on Chaucer's life, language, and works that one needs for a first reading of Chaucer, and difficult words and constructions are glossed on the pages. The Appendix contains the materials, including the extensive notes and glossary, for a more thorough understanding of Chaucer's works.
This is THE Chaucer book, it has everything plus helpful comments and annotations. I wish I had the time to read it front to back, but for now I only had the time to read some of the Tales and the Romaunt of the Rose.
For our philology course of this semester we have read the Canterbury Tales in Middle English. With a little (or a lot of) help of the footnotes, the glossary, and lots more this book offers and of course the lectures and tutorials we did actually manage to read and understand it. I must say that I immensely enjoyed learning more about the Canterbury Tales this way, to know the backgrounds, the history and culture. So so interesting! more
