Phew did this book resonate with me. Eli, a self-proclaimed fat girl, deals with meanness from her classmates, her siblings, and worst of all, her own mother. Everyone has something vicious to say about her size and no one wants to accept her as she is. That is, until her work in therapy helps her understand that the problem is not her size, it's how other people treat her because of her size. She learns to stand up for herself without attacking others and even confronts her fatphobic mother with the help of her therapist. Eli learns to starfish, or proudly take up space, and to let go of her Fat Girl Rules. I was so proud of her by the end of the book. This is an emotional but powerful read and I highly recommend it.
