I don't know where the author who wrote the first part of the first book went, but he left around that time and never came back.
The rest of this series was a bunch of blustery prose with zero character development from most of the cast, "conflicts" that are hardly addressed between characters.
Not to mention tons of teasing of Elphaba (who is the best character) possibly returning. This was a poor attempt at a cat and mouse routine as he continually brings up and then shoots down the possibility.
And what happened with Glinda? She had a perfect arc in the musical which gave you a great template to having a strong female character, and you continually dropped the ball.
