Say there was a novel in which Holden Caulfield was an alcoholic and Lolita was a photographer’s assistant and, somehow, they met in Bright Lights, Big City. He’s blinded by love. She by ambition. Diary of an Oxygen Thief is an honest, hilarious, and heartrending novel, but above all, a very realistic account of what we do to each other and what we allow to have done to us.

This novel proved an abhorrent debut with a horrendous protagonist. Though the book eventually progressed to something more than emotionally torturing girlfriends, there was still little to no plot to speak of. I don’t mind reading books about dislikable characters, but there needs to be depth to them. If “whiny asshole” is their only quality, I’m neither invested nor interested in how the narrative plays out. To compare his character to Holden Caulfield is also both inaccurate and false advertising. I was hoping for something written in a similar vein to Catcher in the Rye but was let down instantaneously. To describe his lover as Lolita is another unwarranted way of reeling the potential reader in; looking sixteen but being twenty-seven is nothing remotely like Nabakov’s famous work. The fact this book uses Lolita and Holden as bait to reel in readers is deceptive and cruel. If I knew what …
