This novel proved an abhorrent debut with a horrendous protagonist. Though the book eventually progressed to something more than emotionally torturing girlfriends, there was still little to no plot to speak of. I don’t mind reading books about dislikable characters, but there needs to be depth to them. If “whiny asshole” is their only quality, I’m neither invested nor interested in how the narrative plays out. To compare his character to Holden Caulfield is also both inaccurate and false advertising. I was hoping for something written in a similar vein to Catcher in the Rye but was let down instantaneously. To describe his lover as Lolita is another unwarranted way of reeling the potential reader in; looking sixteen but being twenty-seven is nothing remotely like Nabakov’s famous work.
