Review of 'Transformers: Exodus: The Official History of the War for Cybertron' on 'Goodreads'
4 stars
I've been a fan of The Trasnformers since Beast Wars aired on daytime television. While my fandom of it fades in and out, I'm pretty much a fan of every incarnation of the series.
The latest Universe, is the 'Aligned' Continuity, which contains both the War For Cybertron and Fall of Cybertron games, as well as the Transformers: Prime television series. As I'm a big fan of both of these things, reading the prequel novels was/is on my to-do list.
Transformers: Exodus, as the subtitle states, is a History of the War for Cybertron, and contains events prior and during the first War for Cybertron game. Though, fair warning--the events do not follow the games exactly, and there are differences in continuity. This book is sort of an attempt to bridge continuity between the games and the television series, that still ends up leaving continuity gaps. Personally, that didn't …

Personally, that didn't damage my enjoyment of the work, but I could see how it could hold someone up.
Either way, honestly, I can't imagine reading this if you weren't already a fan of the series. Descriptions are brief, and it's almost understood that you're already familiar with most of the cast when you're reading. It sort of jumps right in and goes.
While there is an overall plot, Megatron vs Optimus for the planet and the Dark Energon plot thread, most of the book is short scenes. Some of them happen one right after another, but more often than not, there's a great deal of time between chapters. It's sort of snip-bits that all tie together.
I enjoyed it.
Quite a few moments with my favorite characters made me smile, and while I was already familiar with the general on-goings of the work, it was nice to read them more fleshed out. Megatron, Starscream, and Optimus are all here in full form. Alpha Trion gets center spotlight, and even some of my favorite characters got minor mentions (Ultra Magnus, Jetfire, Springer, and so forth). It was fun, and if you enjoy any of the other games or shows in this Universe, I think you'll enjoy the book. (Or even if you'd only seen the Michael Bay Transformers films, I think you'll have a good time.)
I watch Transformers for the characters and their relationships, and Exodus delivered that. I even managed to stay interested in the politics, which usually bore me. So, again: I enjoyed it, and I'd recommend it.
I'm looking forward to the follow up, [b:Transformers Exiles|10870180|Transformers Exiles|Alex Irvine|http://d.gr-assets.com/books/1320562668s/10870180.jpg|15785435] next.
