If you love enemies to lovers romance novels, then you will love this series; indeed it is about the fantasy (one of the best takes on vampirism ever, if you ask me), but also the author doesn't neglect the humanitarian side of the coin; nearly every page has the main character questioning her choices; Poppy is intelligent, beautiful, and confident... all traits in female characters that I absolutely adore.
I wanted to like this book. I really did but...
It started off entertaining enough and the action scenes were gripping and enjoyable.
Unfortunately, that is where the praise leaves me. The heroine as well as the love interest feel two dimensional. I didn't so much feel like I was being introduced to her as I was supposed to feel like I could be her. The love interest is... problematic. I enjoyed the 'bad boy banter' but his actions stretch the term 'dubious consent' on numerous occasions in ways that are excused because 'from him she likes it' - and while we know this as the reader, he definitely cannot be sure of this.
Unfortunately, the book is also wholly predictable with every single plot twist not so much foreshadowed as spelled out in neon lights.

This has literally jumped to my number one book/series spot this year! That spot has long been held by both SJM’s series (tied), and this book and its sequel have completely replaced this series for me, and launched a legit obsession with JLA and all of her books!!! It’s now been almost 6 months since I first read it and I still think about it ALL the time, read posts and theories in the Facebook group daily, and trrrryyyy to wait patiently for the rest of the series!!!
