excellent, eye-opening read
5 stars
Ansary provides the reader with a very generous and critical narrative of the Islamic world. In doing so he opens upy western readers' Eyes for a massive blind spot on the map of the world. He is thorough, frank and personal, and even though he writes from a personal interest and his identity as an Afghan Muslim, you can never catch him out on being overly partial. He does insert some nostalgia for his own youth and ties to the history he's describing.
It's a riveting read, which opened my eyes and gave me a new perspective on the world, which, basically, means taking the veil off my eyes.
Warning for those of a overly sensitive western-dominated world view: is post-colonialist in tone.
