I read this once a year at least. Itโs always been a deep rooted favorite of mine. Quiet, contemplative, and very bittersweet. Itโs one of those books thatโs shaped me as a person.
When I found this book on the shelves of my local vintage bookstore I thought it was out of place among the pulpy romance novels, westerns, and detective stories. I flipped through it wondering what on earth a saccharine Disney kids story could be doing with so many adult books. That man just so happens to be a deer.
This sweet, nature-loving story is a treasure for any child. There is no "Flower" and the characters are less anthropomorphized than in most animal based children's fiction.
