I remember myself reading this and asking myself: Is this an actual story or a collection of asimov-inspired dad jokes?

The second book in the Ultimate Guide to the Galaxy and I must say, it really went downwards ... had to struggle to get through it. Not much made sense and the writer just keeps inventing weird shit to "save" our characters. No consequences at all and boring as fish.
βThe History of every major Galactic Civilization tends to pass through three distinct and recognizable phases, those of Survival, Inquiry and Sophistication, otherwise known as the How, Why and Where phases. βFor instance, the first phase is characterized by the question How can we eat? the second by the question Why do we eat? and the third by the question Where shall we have lunch?β
My question now is: "where are the reasons people actually like these books?"
I won't be reading any more books in this series ...
Rereading the series because I enjoyed it so much the first time. Light and easy read, especially the second time around!
