When fifteen-year-old Clary Fray heads out to the Pandemonium Club in New York City, she hardly expects to witness a murder― much less a murder committed by three teenagers covered with strange tattoos and brandishing bizarre weapons. Then the body disappears into thin air. It's hard to call the police when the murderers are invisible to everyone else and when there is nothing―not even a smear of blood―to show that a boy has died. Or was he a boy?

This is Clary's first meeting with the Shadowhunters, warriors dedicated to ridding the earth of demons. It's also her first encounter with Jace, a Shadowhunter who looks a little like an angel and acts a lot like a jerk. Within twenty-four hours Clary is pulled into Jace's world with a vengeance when her mother disappears and Clary herself is attacked by a demon. But why would demons be interested in ordinary …

Overall, I loved the story and the characters. It's a beautiful world that Clare created. I really like all the fantasy creatures and the history of her world.

However, two things really put me off a little.
1. Clarys obsession with Jace led her to do the weirdest things in dangerous situations, which didn't really make sense to me.
2. <spoiler> Jace being turned by Valentine into his puppy in less than 24h does not add up with the character he has been on the 400+ pages before. His character is based on the tragic death of his dad and the hate for Valentine. But with one day V. is able to sweet talk Jace into throwing overboard everything he believes? Jace who doesn't trust anyone?! Without proof, just a story that seemingly adds up nicely? Wtf... If Valentine had drugged him or cast a spell on him... Yeah, that …

A gripping tale. Meet Clary who is tossed into a world she’s never heard of when her mother suddenly disappears.

It’s hard to say something about the story without spoiling it at the same time, but if you like great good guys, and bad guys on motorbikes that have special features, you can’t go wrong with this book. The action is fast-paced, the characters are well worked-out and there are surprises around every corner. The rest of the series is definitely on my list.
