A wonderfully gripping and honest tale a queer person on a journey to fit in a society that is intolerant of their queerness. And what a journey! Kate Bornstein grew up knowing that there was queerness there, and that she was unable to express it freely. She found tiny ways to both conceal it and find wiggle room, and the first biggest solace she found was (to my surprise) Scientology: a practice where every human's "soul" is neither male nor female. That was enough to be sucked into the crazy ass reality that is Scientology (honestly also a great account of this "faith", worth reading also to just learn what Scientology is about).
Anyhoo, this person navigating mid-20th century America, being utterly queer, and trying to find their place. It's at times funny and at times heartbreaking - and honestly SUCH IS LIFE. And for sure queer lives. Ahhh the …
