està guai - i és necessari - entendre l'internet a nivell sistèmic i no tant a nivell individual i personal com tendim a fer quan xerrem amb amigues. però crec que m'esperava una altra cosa; potser més una immersió profunda (deep dive lol) en certs temes que es toquen per sobre com l'evolució del internet dels 90 a avui, més detalls sobre les Big Tech i com funcionen, o la nostra (falta de) privacitat, les dades que els-hi (les-hi? lol) proporcionem... i sobretot alternatives/mapes de ruta per a fer de l'internet un espai habitable, un espai de comuns (commons) com ho era en la seva incepció. què podem fer, no només com a govern (expropiar?? in this economy??) sinó com a comunitats d'usuàries habitants d'aquest espai hostil.

per exemple, ja existeixen alternatives a plataformes Big Tech en quan a mil coses com navegadors o proveïdors d'email. utilitzem-les! compartim coneixement i sabers! trobem-nos a altres espais! des d'aquest petit racó governat pel jeff besòs us comento: l'Alba Lafarga està a Bookwyrm (alternativa a goodreads) ho intentem? no shade pero storygraph suxxxx tbh ok intentem-ho sóc aquesta: martattack@bookwyrm.social

so this is dark academia in a book amirite ladies??? what a nice little treat for the tortured soul, the suffering poet, or the pedantic intellectual (check, check, and check!).

really enjoyed the author's style and choice of narrator-pov, as well as the pace and intrigue of the first half and of the very last pages. the main characters are insufferable alcoholics but they do evoke a certain mysterious attraction, as experienced by the main character (also an insufferable alcoholic). really enjoyed the embodiment of ancient Greek morality in their professor (vs the hegemonic Judeochristian morality we all know and love) - and how these rich kids' obsession with it ends up rendering them even more alienated from the human experience, and eventually destroying them. i would've even enjoyed more screen time (lol) of the professor and his takes on ancient Greek notions of beauty and virtue (i told you im a pedantic intellectual!)

didn't enjoy the middle part of the book, where they all just drink and argue and what even was the point. didn't enjoy the writing of Camilla, as she was written as, well... The GirlTM. manic pixie dream girl and all that jazz (i guess thats also a product of the pov).

all in all: wonderful (and i cant stress this enough) start, but gets wayyy weaker towards the middle/end.

the queer struggle es algo que siempre me va a fascinar y conmover, y el struggle de Camila y sus compañeras es tal que me rompe el corazón. todo este relato rompe el corazón en mil pedazos y te hace querer proteger a las trans las travestis y las trabajadoras sexuales. Anécdota tras anécdota cada una más dolorosa o más terrible, la verdad es que quizás me faltó hilo narrativo, como que simplemente estaba observando boquiabierta un universo oculto de gente deleznable (los clientes siempre por supuesto). a sacar garras y a enseñar los dientes por las mujeres trans!!!! y punch!!!!!

Then this book is for you!

Wow this has been a truly fascinating read, yet so complex and rich that I find it hard to reproduce a narrative thread when talking about it with friends. OK I'll give it a try: it starts with a strong critique to the capitalist notion of time as fungible, as a linear succession of equal units to be used and exchanged, all identical to the others and bound to labor or (self!)exploitation, with no regards to any other planetary or biological fluctuations that occur with time. This hegemonic construction of time renders us, sometimes, unable to feel like agents, like we have a say in the future of our society. Jenny Odell urges us to break free from this construct, and to tap into other incredibly interesting ways of conceptualizing time, so that we can regain our lost agency and be collectively empowered to inhabit time in a way that will create the societies and the planet we desire.

Did that make sense?! So much is underlined and so many notes! She says it all so much better so y'all better read this. Special mention to how not only does she reference books to make her points, but she weaves in works of art and their meanings and they enrich the whole story so much!! Special mention to how I read this as I became unemployed and for a brief moment I felt so free from the shackles of capitalism..... !!!!

Empecé el libro un poco confusa, y mientras avanzaba me iba relamiendo los bigotes: qué delicia ir uniendo las piezas de este puzzle que son las historias oscuras de un pueblo perdido de México en la era pre-digital. Me ha !!!encantado!!! esta narración directa e indirecta, donde una historia en realidad son múltiples historias desde muchas perspectivas, donde los personajes existen más allá de su propia percepción, y donde se pone en evidencia el abismo que hay entre lo privado y lo público. En un contexto donde todos se conocen y saben de los demás, lo que pasa en lo más íntimo y oscuro acaba siendo una gran sorpresa. Y lo vas descubriendo poco a poco, deshilachando estas historias como si estuviese hablando con diferentes personas del pueblo.

En este libro no hay protagonistas y las historias son vividas pero también explicadas por los demás y esto es como la vida misma.

Por último tengo que decir que hay pasajes que han sido extremadamente duros, terribles de leer. Muchas situaciones son increíblemente incómodas y straight up disturbing. Trigger warning de abuso sexual. Además por un momento creo que ha comparado bestialidad con homosexualidad? UMMMM

Sens dubte el llibre que hauria d'haver llegit als 18 anys!

Un llibre bastant bandarra que expressa tantes i tantes experiències que he viscut com a catalana de poble que marxa de casa, bén lluny, i de bén joveneta. En efecte, el nostre món és molt petit, i quan entres en contacte per primer cop amb altres móns... Flipes. Però aquesta incredulitat, confusió, inclús espant, són coses que vaig viure fa mil trescents quaranta dos anys; ara m'apropo a la diferència des de una posició que m'atreveixo a dir que és més madura, amb cura, curiositat, i humilitat. Per això no sento tanta empatia per la pobra Rita Rèiquens, incapaç d'empatitzar o d'entendre fins a bén entrat el llibre.

Això dit, l'escriptura tant hiperbòlica a vegades és desternillant (a vegades una mica massa). Menció especial al sentiment d'estar perduda i de no tenir direcció en la vida (sentiment que es repetirà de forma periòdica fins el dia que em mori????) i a la relació de la prota amb la seva família i sobretot, per suposat, la seva àvia <3

Very interesting journey into the shaping of !!!western!!! mindsets and approaches to nature from the 20th century to today. It's quite a deep philosophical question really, where we are set at the start of the book: what is the position of humankind in this planet we find ourselves in? how do we then relate to all other beings, to the non-human? are we, in a cartesian way, unique and different from all automata out there, and thus need to use nature to our whim to preserve our special human ingenuity? (the wizard) or are we just a being equal to any other, part of an interconnected, balanced system that must be honored and preserved? (the prophet)

it's crazy to see how this dichotomy is the underlying mechanism that will shape so many opinions and attitudes to the way societies should work! the author spends a lot of the book explaining how these 2 attitudes have shaped the advance of food, water, and energy technology in the 20th centuries and how they've been at odds with the other.

by the end i was a bit bored but it was a verrrry interesting read!!! so much relevant info about recent history and modern advances in science that i can't reproduce anymore dammit why does this always happen!!!

Sí sí sí más contenido crítico sobre el turismo! Un tema tan peliagudo, con tantas implicaciones políticas, económicas, y filosóficas, y qué difícil desenredar un poquito tal lío para poder sacar alguna conclusión satisfactoria.

Realmente no sé si es incluso posible sacar alguna conclusión satisfactoria, pero Anna Pacheco consigue desenredar un aspecto del temazo para que lo veas con un poquito más de claridad y para que te hagas más preguntas - and honestly that's the best we can ask for!

Muy interesantes reflexiones sobre al aspecto aspiracional de viajar y hacer turismo, y cómo fue parte de la manufacturación de la clase mediana (I came here to have a good time and I'm honestly feeling so attacked right now!!). Además muy fuerte que para la investigación de este libro se coló en reuniones de gestión vs trabajadores de grandes hoteles de lujo en Barcelona y realmente parece ficción, parece SÁTIRA joder. Hace que quieras organizar la maldita revolución socialista que nos fue prometida contra los burgueses pero esque además el personal de gestión ni siquiera owns the fucking means of production!!! La ideología capitalista nos ha comido el cerebro y tenemos que hacer una reconcienciación de clase para sobrevivir la era de los millonarios!!!
