I thought this would be more thriller than it was, but it was still good. It’s more of a drama, I’d say, since nothing dire happens til ~2/3 into the book. It’s more of a character study.
That was a main strength of the book, the unique characters Braverman created. They all had different motivations and different reactions to the situation as it worsened. They’re all a bit annoying
Good read. Setup and development of story and characters is well done.

I absolutely loved Braverman's debut, Welcome to the Goddamn Ice Cube, and while I don't consider myself one of her die-hard online #uglydogs fans, I've followed her on Twitter for years & admire her work & life.
A few years ago, she & her husband Quince Mountain both [separately] participated in the reality survival series Naked and Afraid, and it's those experiences which fuel the best parts of her debut novel, Small Game, which is set in a survival reality show somewhere Up North.
I loved the character development, the pacing, the closely observed detail . . . pretty much all of it, right up to the last few pages. As though she ran out of steam, she kinda TL;DRs what I would have hoped to have been a final couple of chapters down into a page or two.
Nevertheless, it was great fun, and for me, at least, the abrupt ending didn't undercut my enjoyment much.
Ich habe intensiv auf den Erscheinungstermin dieses Buchs gewartet (normalerweise vergesse ich ihn sofort nach der Ankündigung und denke dann erst Jahre später wieder dran, oder nie). Ich habe das E-Book schon Wochen vor dem Termin gekauft (auch das zum ersten Mal) und am Erscheinungstermin im Stundentakt nachgesehen, ob es schon da ist. Man bekommt ein in den USA erscheinendes E-Book in Deutschland um fünf Uhr morgens, wie ich jetzt weiß. Es endet, wie die meisten Bücher, nicht ganz so befriedigend, wie es angefangen hat, gegen Ende kommen mehrere handlungszusammenfassende Stellen. Aber die erste Hälfte war sehr gut und absolut nichts ist so ausgegangen, wie ich es mir beim Lesen auf der Basis von vielen Überlebensbüchern und -filmen vorgestellt hatte. Wie man einen Roman "during a winter dogsled season" schreiben kann, ist mir vollkommen rätselhaft.

This book grabs you and you want to keep spending time with these character and then it twists and turns and breaks your heart. So good. I thought about it when I wasn't reading it and as soon as I was home again I was curled up working on another chapter. Adventure. Survival. Love. Loss. It's all here.
