PKD, per usual, delves into the complexities of human nature and society by holding up a technological mirror, allowing us insight into human perception, reaction, and motivation. This collection in particular left me with a sense unease at how we, individually and communally, restrict the movement of thought, lest the fear of its power overwhelms our ability to survive. Ultimately, I believe we, as a civilization of Kardashev type 0 (essentially, Earth-bound apes), will be confronted with many of these challenges at some point or another, lending further magnitude to the concepts discussed by Dick.
PKD can sometimes write in an inscrutable fashion, restricting my ability to fully comprehend his intent. This was thankfully on rare display throughout, though two or three of the stories were either too high-minded or convoluted for my understanding.
