The Algebraist (2005, Orbit) 3 stars

It is 4034 AD. Humanity has made it to the stars.

Seconded to a military-religious …

i put down another book that i'd been getting more and more bored with reading - and this one is just so much more engaging!

the language is wonderfully evocative, the plots are intricate and fun, and there's just a joyful creativity and intelligence in this book so far.

really enjoying it!

By heresies distressed (2009, Tor) 4 stars

i lost interest in this book and series.

it's a bewildering array of characters with very little impact on the world, and they all seem to be a bit flat.

except for the main protagonist (merlin) who's a just-so hero with magical abilities and knowledge about everything.

it was fun for a while, but never went anywhere interesting.

Off Armageddon Reef (2007, Tor Books) 4 stars

With humankind reduced to a single colony on the world of Safehold, the human rulers …

a fun power-fantasy for a military geek

4 stars

fun and engaging at times, at other times it drags you into plots with s plethora of characters that seen to be named strangely just for the fun of it.

I enjoyed it, but it's probably not for everybody

i am now about a third into this book. it's engaging and fun, but there are a huge number of characters to keep track of.

after the first few chapters i started keeping notes to have any chance of keeping up, and i'm already at almost 60 pages of notes.

action and adventure interspersed with intrigue and philiosophy.

not for everyone, but i like it so far.
