Harry Harrison was a writer who had two distinct modes of working. Some of his work is very dark and bleak, while other books are delightfully light and often hilarious. The Stainless Steel Rat (SSR) falls firmly into the latter.
This book follows the adventures of The eponymous "Rat" of the title aka as "Slippery" Jim DiGriz an adventurer and master criminal who operates outside the law. Combining elements of an interstellar James Bond and humor akin to Monty Python or Douglas Adam's "Hitchhikler's" series, Harrison tells a genuinely laugh-out-loud tale that draws you in and fast-tracks you through its pages effortlessly. Don't blame me if you lose sleep reading this one.
Un-put-downable!
Note: This is the first written of the SSR series, later Harrison wrote stories that were chronologically earlier in the life of Jim DiGriz.
