This is a collection of stories about outsiders, whether immigrants to a new country, or people displaced within their own society. The characters strive against the machinations of class, politics, and history, and yet they often have little actual control over their fates.
While the large events of history weave their way through these stories, it is the day to day lived experience that Li focuses on. She makes us feel the displacement, the frustration, the bewilderment of change.
