Awkward as hell to read. Sometimes the characters could be endearing, other times they were infuriating. A lot of it felt like poorly done metaphor, and I couldn't really place much of what was being done.
I like fantasy and mer-people; I like stories that deal with loneliness. I like stories that have people doing things badly and trying to learn how to do them right, but this didn't do that well enough for me.
