"It is intimidating to realize that we live in a world overflowing with misinformation, bias, myths, deception, and flawed knowledge. There really are no ultimate authority figures--no one has the secret, and there is no place to look up the definitive answers to our questions (not even Google). Luckily, THE SKEPTICS' GUIDE TO THE UNIVERSE is your map through this maze of modern life. Here Dr. Steven Novella--along with Bob Novella, Cara Santa Maria, Jay Novella, and Evan Bernstein--will explain the tenets of skeptical thinking and debunk some of the biggest scientific myths, fallacies, and conspiracy theories--from anti-vaccines to homeopathy, UFO sightings to N-rays. You'll learn the difference between science and pseudoscience, essential critical thinking skills, ways to discuss conspiracy theories with that crazy co-worker of yours, and how to combat sloppy reasoning, bad arguments, and superstitious thinking"--Amazon.com.

I really liked this book, but perhaps partly because it fit with MY confirmation bias. I like to be skeptical, but I also know that it's really easy to fall into personal biases without even trying (or recognizing).
The review of different kinds of logical fallacies was good, although I was already familiar with most of them, there being pointed out and given examples within the book was instructive. The fact that the author pointed out things to look for and be aware of was also enlightening. And on the one hand, it really was good to read what I believe and realize the dangers of, it was also good to be reminded of how easy it is to just believe what you want or already do without doing the requisite research!

This book has proven to be the beginning of a new endeavor to understand the world for me. It has proven to be the end of the way I used to view the world.

Hard to describe how much of a burden has been lifted off my shoulders by relearning concepts that I had been taught once before but with baggage attached.

This quote pretty much sums it up for me:

“Skepticism is also fun and empowering. One of the most common bits of feedback we get from listeners is that they’ve finally shed a belief system, and how liberating it is. They don’t have to labor under an oppressive belief anymore. They can think freely and only believe what actually makes sense to them.”
