My husband and I are both Jane Austen fans and have read many of her books to each other aloud. And I was so prepared to love this book, having adored the movie. There were occasional nice turns of phrase or inspired writing (the red book, for example) but the overall book left me dissatisfied and disappointed. Perhaps if it had been long enough to fully flesh out the story, rather than feeling so choppy and snapshotty (I know that's not a word but it's what comes to mind), I'd have enjoyed it better. I had quite some trouble tracking what day it was or even how much time had passed. It felt more like a storyboard with some bit filled in, rather than a fully-realized novel. Ah well.
