So much dislike for all the wrong reasons. I liked this book as a kid. Here's why: it's not about what the boy gets, it's about what the tree gives. The story starts right, the tree loved the little boy, and the story is about the giving of that love, over the course of he boy's life. The tree cares for the boy, grows old, and dies before the boy, giving its love the entire time. It's rather an analogue for the maternal/parental love. If you can't see that, grow up, live some life, have a family, then read it again... to your own children.
