Written for the juvenile mid-20th century sci-fi market, the story focuses on relationships between family members, friends, and enemies. Podkayne, a human girl born on Mars, has the opportunity to travel to Terra with her Uncle and her younger brother. She learns about good and evil, trust and betrayal, and, of course, about herself.

I was a bit disappointed by this story. It's set up is great, with Poddy's intelligence and ambition shining through. Then, slowly, that all fades, as Poddy becomes more and more reliant on her male family members (Uncle Tom and her brother Clark) and questions both her desire and capability to become a starship pilot.

At the same time as Poddy's agency diminishes, so does the thrust of the story. What starts out as an adventure to explore new (to Poddy) worlds, turns into a frustratingly slow-paced abduction tale in which Poddy repeatedly shows how incapable she is of doing anything on her own. As I read, I kept hoping that Heinlein was going to subvert the increasingly misogynistic trajectory somehow. He never does, and the worst offense comes at the end when Tom calls Poddy's father to blame him for Poddy's condition because he didn't make his wife stay …

What a nasty book.
This book is more about Podkayne’s little brother Clark, and a more vicious, anti-social eleven-year-old then him is hard to find.
Poddy is basically there to show that women should not be spaceship captains, and to be killed by her brother.
If you want a more enjoyable read with a heroine called Podkayne, of Mars, try [b:Rolling Thunder|1343076|Rolling Thunder (Thunder and Lightning, #3)|John Varley|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1435905015s/1343076.jpg|1332669]. (The name is a clear shout-out to Heinlein, and Varley’s book is part of a series. You may just as well read them all.)
