Review of 'Cloud Atlas' on 'Storygraph'

In my customarily sporadic manner of picking up books to read, I picked this one up after seeing a cardboard standup for the movie version at the movie theater. It looked interesting, and as I found out with very little research that it was an adaptation of a book, I set out to read the book. (I try in most cases to read the books before I see their movie adaptations, not always successfully - in this case, months later I have yet to see the movie) As for Cloud Atlas itself, I came to it knowing nothing (I was so startled when the narrator changed so abruptly that I had to run a quick google search to make sure there weren't pages missing). Once I was reassured that I wasn't missing anything, I was able to really enjoy the book. I was and am still very impressed by the author's ability to write in different narrative voices and keep them all unique. I also enjoyed the way he spins the characters' stories together so that while they were all removed by years upon years from each other, the reader could catch glimpses of how they could be connected, and then he proceeds to wrap them all together in the latter half of the book. It was well worth the read and became difficult to put down by the end. A once-reader for me, but well worth my time for the speculation on technological progress put forth and the panoramic perspective on the march of humankind across centuries.
