A new world is possible and not just in our hearts. Anarchic Agreements is a quintessential field guide for the revolution, answering the practical questions often left out of works of political theory and philosophy. How do leaderless groups organize? How might they create constitutions, balance power and write protocols? How do group cultures and institutions maintain coalitions? This urgent and inspiring how-to is the product of more than twenty years of research. Designed explicitly for everyday use, it contains lived examples and text from current horizontally organized constitutions. These documents illustrate the never-ending process of developing community and keeping collaborations alive in the fairest ways possible. Written by dedicated anarchist scholars and organizers, and based on the widely popular Anarchic Agreements pamphlet series, this book facilitates grassroots activism and provides methods to improve and streamline decision making. It is an inspiring celebration of the novel, complex, and flexible constitutions …

Tips bastante prácticos

4 stars

Anarchic Agreements

Anarchic Agreements is a non-fiction how-to book about organizing in leaderless groups. It focuses on creating explicit "consensual, changeable, and conscious" agreements (via constitutionalizing), ways to make coalition building between groups more effective, and various examples of declarations and statements, and finally a few worksheets. I wish there were some more small examples (A group had B problem and discussed in C way which resulted in D changes) but for a short book there's only so much it can do.

For me personally (who doesn't have a lot of extra background in this sort of thing), this was a much more thorough follow-up answer to the concerns of The Tyranny of Structurelessness in that it presented many questions to ask to interrogate about how decisions are made, how to communicate, and how to make sure to reduce barriers and think about power differences between members in a group.

It's unbelievable how important this material is — without it, it's almost impossible to escape hierarchy in nominally flat institutions, via the Tyranny of Structurelessness, the Iron Law of Institutions, and other phenomena acculturated by propaganda.

The only thing missing here, and to be fair, I'm sure this is a book topic on its own, is how to actually move an extant organization with perhaps the right idea to actually adopt these things in practice when, of course, is itself an org that one does not have hierarchical control over! Driving adoption, i.e.

It's also worth reading for their collation of anarchist sample constitutions alone — what a collection! IWW, Emma Goldman, Occupy, Öcalan/ Democratic Confederalism, Makhnovists, …

Major learnings:

  1. Constitutions don't have to be an inherently conservative or regressive; it's just the way that we've been interacting with the specific statist constitutions that makes them so, meaningfully for us, …
