Extremely worthwhile read. Although I don't entirely agree with Eagleton's understanding of the basics of Christianity, he is much closer to my understanding of Scriptural teachings than are most modern American Protestants. The fact is, Jesus told us to care for 'the least of these', not to legislate other people's morals. Christianity in this country has been poisoned by capitalism, which (as Eagleton points out) in its culture, values and goals is an atheistic system.
